Building a Place to Play

A Letter from Principal Cramer

  • Building a place to play

or a journey of a 1,000 miles must begin with one step...

If you venture to the back of the school, past the gym and towards the new playfields you will see the older kids' playground.  The playground area is not in the best condition.  the equipment is older and not up-to-date.

    Our kids deserve something better!

Join a small group of interested parents who are forming an exploritory committee focused on building a new playground area.  We are at the beginning of this project and we are focused on setting up meetings with equipment providers, researching what's available in terms of grant money, gathering input from the Cedar Way community and much more.

We need help from anyone who is interested.  Help with:

    • determining what playground equipment makes sense for our school and for our budget
    • determining our budget
    • setting up and running or volunteering for fundraising events
    • researching grant opportunities
    • writing grants to get funds for the playground

A Letter from Principal Cramer

Dear Cedar Way Families and Friends,

I need your help.  Our community needs you, needs “US” to take collective action on behalf of our children.

Let me explain.

Last year, our school district (like every district across the country) had to make deep cuts in order to keep from going fiscally bankrupt.  The district had to cut over 11 million dollars from the budget.  Here at Cedar Way, we lost half of our Librarian’s position, and chopped our budget for general operating supplies by more than 40%.  Transportation was cut for families that live within a one mile radius of our school, and we added more kids to the classrooms, and eliminated the last teacher hired.  Quite frankly, it has been a painful process, and the challenges we continue to face are consuming more resources than we have access to.

This year, we are facing a prospect that’s much worse.

If the community does not approve the continuation of the school levy that is right now before the voters, we will be looking at cuts of about 40 million dollars.  The results of cuts of this magnitude would have a devastating effect on the quality of education our children will have access to.  In the mid seventies, the district endured similar cuts and there was no music, PE, or library, and there were classes with more than 40 children squeezed in.  The stories I have heard are hard to imagine.

Again, Our Community needs Our Help.

What can you do?

  1. Mail in your ballot today.
  1. Talk to your neighbors about what’s at stake – encourage them to stand up with you for our children.  Remind them this is not a new tax.
  1. Encourage your friends to get the message out to their friends, and so on.
  1. Make sure everyone understands that there is only one drop-off site for ballots, and that’s at the Lynnwood Library.  All the others have been eliminated.

I have always been both proud and honored to serve this community.  Thank you so much for your continued support of Cedar Way Elementary!

Sincerely,

Hawk Cramer, Principal
